A LOVE LETTER TO LONDON

Dear London,

Everything about this day was perfect. I mean, nearly. Perfection is unattainable, but in the realm of close-to-perfect days, this one was a winner.

We all know I found peace in you, London. You quickly became home to me. Even when my closest friend left me for Paris {you’re forgiven}. Even after a really hard day looking after three reckless young boys. Even when my long distance relationship felt impossible. Even on the rainiest of days.

London, you delivered.

We had a rough start {let us not forget I almost wasn’t allowed into the country}. But like all relationships, you learn and grow with one another. I was patient and understanding of you. You were loyal and accepting of me. And eventually, my relationship with you, London, became the most important relationship in my life.

I was never homesick with you because, to me, I was home.

I sit here now in California. Also, home. I listen to the classical music play as my mother prepares pumpkin mousse in the kitchen even after the holidays. My cats are curled up on the couch. I have a piping hot cup of tea to keep me warm as it begins to cool down in the late evening. This will always be home, of course. It’s where I grew up and shared many meaningful memories. But no one wants to be a 40 year old living at home, let alone a 25 year old.

It’s time to make moves. Grown up moves. Reality has set in that I am no longer a full time traveler, and my money has begun to run out. I long for my other home unlike anything else. My London home.

Maybe I’ll return. Actually, I know I will return. The question just remains as to when.

Until then, I am moving to a city just as vibrant, just as stimulating, just as challenging. I wouldn’t call it cheating. You remain my most important relationship. I would commit to you 100% if I could {damn you visa restrictions}. But, new cities deserve attention as well.

I love you London. I always will.

But a new city is waiting for me.

Love, Rachel
