THE CALM AFTER THE STORM

I survived my first east coast snow storm! I did it, I did it!

You know you are that {California} girl when you have co-workers calling your desk, from their desk, inches away, asking if they can help {in any way} prepare me for the storm ahead. I mean, is it that obvious I’ve never done this before? If only everything in life worked that way. I wouldn’t mind having a call service available to offer help in preparation for a shit storm that about to uproot your life. Literally I work with the kindest, most hilarious human beings. But alas.

I recently talked to a good friend of mine after having {what I thought to be} a really bad day here in New York. I began listing the reasons, some of which included waiting over an hour for an interview that ended up being a waste of time, an awkward run-in with someone in the office, and discrepancies with my groceries being delivered {who’s the New Yorker now?}

There were, of course, a few more acceptable reasons as to why I was throwing myself a pity party, but we’ll keep the more personal stuff, personal. After listening to me vent and kindly giving me advice when he didn’t need to, he simply told me that I would have a great day tomorrow.

And wouldn’t you know it, I did.

I woke up the same way I did every other morning: snoozed my alarm 16 times, took a shower, refused to wash my hair {that’s why they invented dry shampoo right?}, listened to “Love Myself” by Haliee Steinfeld, “borrowed” oatmeal and a banana at work for my breakfast, and began my day at the office. But I had a new attitude. A little voice in my head saying this day would be great.

I took some deep breaths, saw something that made me laugh, and just like that I was good to go. Laughter to me, is the most important aspect in life. Laughter decides who I surround myself with, what Netflix shows to binge watch, and who I fall in love with. I revolve my life around laughter.

I don’t care what you do, what your background is, or who you think you are. If you can make me laugh, I want to know you. Seriously. And I’ll probably fall in love with you.

Because what could possibly feel better than pure and utter joy? The release of laughter from somewhere deep within you, that normally catches you off guard. I wish I could relive each and every moment that produced a laugh out of me. Good news for me is, I have 86,400 moments every day to make it happen.

Once I was in a good headspace, the rest of the afternoon just flowed.

I began reminiscing on the weekend, strolling through a snow coated central park. The calm after the storm. I had one of those moments. I’ve spoken about them before here on the blog, but they are hard to describe without sounding cliché. There were couples ice-skating, horse and carriages plodding through the park, and children having snow ball fights all around me.

I took the moment in. Entirely.

I live in New York City. I blinked. And blinked again, before fully accepting the unbelievable truth. This is my life.

Moments like this one, help me re-evaluate my bad days. My shitty afternoons. Or nights full of doubt.

So laugh a little more, practice gratitude, and if all else fails: WINE.
