HUNGRY FOR HUNGARY

Before we completely dive into copious amounts of Croatia posts, let’s take a deep breath and talk about Hungary! More specifically, Budapest.

For a meeting point, Eric and I decided we would take a few days away from Croatia to explore the city of Budapest. Many people have mentioned this city as being extremely underrated. And I agree that it is a fabulous city that I hope to explore further on another trip. After traveling for two weeks straight, I was very content with reuniting with Eric and having a few days of rest and relaxation.

We did manage to get out and wander about the city, starting with a firework display on our first night, in celebration of St. Stephen’s Day!

We spent the next day walking from Pest to Buda, Buda to Pest, sightseeing and taking in the views. We managed to somewhat figure out the public transport system in Budapest, but mostly used our two feet to get us everywhere. Since it was our only full day dedicated to exploring, we saw what we could fit in, but knew we were probably missing out on so many hidden treasures.

We began our day at Fisherman’s Bastion. It was a cloudy afternoon, but still warm enough to be comfortable in shorts and a tank.

If you plan on walking up, you are in for a bit of a hike, but for every great view comes the sacrifice of a prior leg work out.

Above seeing the beautiful sights, was the fact that I was reunited with the love of my life after another four months apart. If we are being honest, I was beyond ready to go back to London after our last goodbye in Bali. But it had nothing to do with this guy, and everything to do with a body rash. Now back on some less humid turf, we are able to fully enjoy each other’s company, uninterrupted.

We continued our journey and stumbled upon an array of sweets. So. much. sugar.

We both zeroed in on long, multicolored, candy ropes. We immediately purchased, without comprehending the fact that we just spent 1000 HRK on candy. That is about 10 USD. On candy ropes.

And they tasted disgusting.

What a disappointment.

The next leg of our afternoon brought us to the Parliament building. And what a beauty she was.

Budapest was just what I needed.

A quiet few days reconnecting with my loved one, unexpectedly celebrating a Hungarian national holiday, and discovering another new city.

No complaints from this side of the world.

Side note: This whole blogging while abroad thing is really not the business I’ve decided. With the need to constantly absorb my current travels, while also reflecting and reminiscing on my prior travels, finding the time to sit and write has become a struggle. I hope to keep things interesting, but apologize for my lack of commitment to each blog post recently. I understand most of these posts have simply become a recap of the bullet points in different cities visited. And I don’t like that. I want to include more, reflect more, and engage more. I believe in quality over quantity, but also feel the need to continue to update friends and family back home on my travels around Europe and beyond. I hope to get a grasp on it soon, taking advantage of my 4+ hour bus rides and what not. Until then, bear with me.

Next up, bathing in Budapest!
